Until 1925, Erwin, NC was known as Duke. The name was changed that year to avoid confusion with the newly-formed Duke University in Durham. Erwin is also the home of two other institutions of higher learning: Campbell University and Central Carolina Community College. Erwin is located approximately 8 miles from Dunn and 33 miles from Fayetteville. The Averasboro Battlefield Historic District, the site of a Civil War battle, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
